Pink October Challenge: engage your teams at the start of the school year

1. But what is breast cancer in fact?

The breast cancer is now the most common cancer in the world. In fact, in 2020, there were 2.3 million women affected and 685,000 deaths worldwide and that same year, 7.8 million women were diagnosed with this cancer in the past five years. Breast cancer is the leading cause of death by cancer in women around the world.

Today, several risk factors are identified. Although we know that some prevent the disease as much as possible, others are unfortunately unavoidable. Female gender is the highest risk factor for breast cancer. Only 0.5 to 1% of breast cancers develop in men. Fortunately, by identifying the symptoms as soon as possible, the Breast cancer heals in 9 out of 10 cases. Hence the importance of raising awareness about screening... And Pink October Participate strongly in it!

2. Who says October says October... pink!

To understand the beginnings of the operation, you have to go back a few years... In 1985, in the United States, TheAmerican Cancer Society organized, in partnership with the company Imperial Chemical Industries, a month-long campaign, from October 1 to 31, to raise awareness about breast cancer screening and mammography: the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Although initially only communication, actions were organized on this occasion over the years.

A few years later, in 1992, Evelyn H. Lauderet, vice-president of Estée Lauder, was then in remission. In collaboration with Self Magazine, she created the association “Ruban Rose”. This association aims to represent the Women's fight against breast cancer. The company Estée Lauder then distributed pink ribbons in its stores in New York.

And besides, why pink ribbons? This color was chosen because it is a color “feminine, sweet, cheerful and evokes good health, everything that Cancer is not”, according to the association Breast Cancer Action.

A few months later, Evelyn Lauder created” The Breast Cancer Research Foundation ” which aims to support innovation in the field of clinical and genetic research. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation is born as well as the pink ribbon and the prevention campaign as we know them.
